About BDPA

For 40 years, BDPA has enabled the upward mobility of African Americans and other minorities in the Information Technology (IT) and STEM fields. Through its 40+ local community chapters in major cities across the United States, BDPA has been at the forefront of promoting the minority agenda within the IT profession since 1975. BDPA has been a leader and pioneer in technology and STEM training for IT professionals and High School students since 1986. Our National High School Computer Competition (HSCC) program which is a hands-on training program, has introduced tens of thousands of high school students to coding and application development while also presenting opportunities for students to obtain college scholarships due to the generosity of our sponsors and partners. Because of BDPA’s focus on students and professional members alike, we continue to support and lead the upward success of our members “from the classroom to the boardroom”.

Understanding the

BDPA Pillars


Today's leaders require more than one set of skills. The new crop of aspiring technology leaders will have the best chance of obtaining leadership roles when they are well-rounded with exposure and expertise in many facets of operations and technology leadership. That means, operational skills like finance, governance, and process will be just as important as technology and soft-skills. Furthermore, the NEXT group of new leaders are expected to have an entrepreneurial mind-set — it will be expected that they understand what it takes to build and grow a business and how technology enables top and bottom line growth.

LeadershipNext program is solely focused on developing our members to strengthen their leadership skills in the areas of: presentation skills, business acumen, relationship building, developing others and building high performing teams. The objective is to insure our members are well-rounded and obtain the core skills needed to provide value back to their respective organization and propel that professional career forward.

BDPA Connect

The engagement of college students is critical to the continued growth and development of our future leaders within and outside of BDPA. The BDPA Connect series is about providing a platform for our aspiring young leaders, entrepreneurs, and technologists to give their insights and views on technology trends, how organizations like BDPA can better engage them; and also what they believe is NEXT for them personally and in the technology and STEM space.

BDPA Connect is all about college student engagement. It is a 1 day/ 4 hour Symposium that is planned and run by recent college graduates and those still attending college. Panelists are also current or recent college students in a Science degree program or an aspiring entrepreneur or author.

BDPA Connect will take place a minimum of 4 times a year in select BDPA Chapter cities.

Key Objectives:
  • Engagement of college students
  • Establishing a partnership and relationship with college students and aspiring young leaders
  • Obtain valuable insight that will shape current and future BDPA programs
  • Provide a networking and relationship building platform for college students and recruiters
  • Introduce students to BDPA and encourage them to join and/or volunteer
  • Provide participates with a platform to demonstrate their products or services




Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education are key and relevant skills needed in today's world in order for students to effectively excel in their respective IT field of study and professional career choice. We focus on these areas together, not only because the skills and knowledge in each discipline are essential to a student's success, but also because these fields are deeply intertwined in the real world and in how students learn effectively. Since 1986 BDPA has been a leader in technology and STEM based training space. We have introduced tens of thousands of students to technology and STEM through our Student Information Technology Education & Scholarships (SITES) program which includes year-round technology and STEM based workshops, webinars, and other activities.

In 2016, BDPA will be adding activities and programs focused on the Arts, Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship to our STEM related programs, these new components make up the "+" in STEM+.

In short, our STEM+ programs consist of our:
  • SITES (HSCC, Workshops, Webinars, Scholarships)
  • Partnership with COMPTIA that provides certification and training in various fields of IT
  • Financial Literacy training
  • Entrepreneurship training
  • Yearly IT Showcase
  • Coders Rumble
